Leila Gurruwiwi is a cultural awareness advocate and mentor. As well as dabbling in some acting in both award winning series Glitch Season 1 and 2 and The Secret River (both ABC series) and KAGE theatre production Team of Life, Leila has combined a successful media career, including 11 years as a reporter and newsreader on The Marngrook Footy Show, with community pursuits in her former roles mentoring young girls in the Wirrpanda Foundation's Deadly Sista Girlz program and being an Indigenous Support Worker at the Pavilion School, a school for young people who have been disengaged or excluded from mainstream education. Leila also worked as the Education Officer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, where she helped Indigenous student excel and supports their families while also supporting schools in become more culturally safe spaces.
Leila now works in the First Nations art space at Agency Projects, a non for profit that helps celebrate and elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and their communities as the Public Programs Coordinator.
Leila is currently working on a new document called Jarracharra looking at the rise of First Nations fashions locally, nationally and internationally.
Leila is also a regular broadcaster on Broad Radio, radio for women and hosts a weekly show called Yapas Yarnin’ where she shares First Nations women’s stories, knowledge, wisdom and music choices.
Leila is the proud mum to her son Uzoma who she hopes to instil strong cultural connections to both his Indigenous and Nigerian cultures.
