Men Doing Wonders Series - Simon

This year, to celebrate the month of Father’s Day, we asked men that running impactful enterprises and are part of our Ethical Lifestyle Hub Directory, what is driving them to lead a business with purpose. Those we highlight are men of strength, compassion, and resilience - working toward bettering the world around them as well as being a Father or mentor. This blog highlights Simon Holloway of Vegepod

Vegepod is proudly Australian owned and operated with our Head office in Sydney's Northern beaches. Our self contained, self-watering raised garden beds with protective covers are simply the easiest way to get growing your own. Vegepod gardens come in 3 x sizes with an option to elevate with a stand or trolley and are suitable for small and large spaces alike.

Tell us about you and why you started your organisation

Before Vegepod I worked through an eclectic range of jobs, from a translator in Japan to a scuba guide in Micronesia, from operations management at an air ambulance to agency land with big corporate. All of those experiences were beneficial in forming me and providing experience, indeed some in very interesting arenas and roles – however none of them gave me full sense of application and fulfilment on multiple levels. Helping people grow their own food - anyone, anywhere, in any climate, in any abode – is extremely fulfilling and the fact it’s my own business takes it to another level as well.

Did fatherhood encourage you to set up an impactful business? Why?

You bet ya sweet patooties it did!! My family is the most important thing in the world to me. I just love hanging and doing things with my kids, always did, always will. So when I surf, they surf, when I talk, I talk with them, when I eat, I share food with them, aaaand when I garden, I teach them gardening and the love of nature. And that is the essence of Vegepod. It’s an extension of my fatherhood I think.

What impact do you hope to achieve through your business?

We believe it is a human right for everyone to enjoy growing at least a little bit of their food. We enable that. We have a whole division, of which I head, devoted to Community, whereby we ensure extra effort and deals (often charity too) are made to ensure many needy and vulnerable groups around the world are indeed included in accessible food-gardening.

What legacy do you want to leave behind as a father to your children?

The ability to think constructively, to be fair, to always look for problems to solutions and not just wallow in the problems themselves, to laugh at almost everything, to be mostly The ability to think constructively, to be fair, to always look for solutions to problems and not just wallow in the problems themselves, to laugh at almost everything, to be mostly irreverent to everything but also identify those very few times when a seriousness and respect is required, to remain in awe of Mother Nature, to find ways to better the world and oneself.
