The Scarf Project

Moral Fairground and RMIT students embarked on a mission to raise money for Lao Sericulture water, a not for profit organisation and registered World Fair Trade member in Laos.

Silk scarves made by hand in the villages in Laos were hand printed by RMIT students and were available for sale at the Fair Fashion show.

Funds raised from the sale of the scarves are directed toward the water filter and toilet project for schools and hospitals in remote villages of Laos.

Out of the 11 scarves produced, 4 were sold raising $600.00, which will allow us to buy 10 water filters.

Our aim is to sell the remainder of the scarves for this very worthwhile project so that we can reach our target of being able to purchase 30 filters.

Each scarf is individually made and unique, these is an amazing gift idea for someone special or simply buy a one off piece for yourself and know that you are supporting an fantastic cause.

NAB Tips

Hints for getting Fairtrade on the agenda. Environment & Sustainability / Beyond Carbon Neutral

Tip No.1 – Bring in the big guns
Our first tip for purchasing Fairtrade products for your workplace is to ensure you have the support of senior management. This support will fuel all your endeavours, create clarity around how this initiative links into your business objectives and ensure a long term commitment.

Detail on what NAB has done in this space can be found on our Supply Chain page – click here.

Tip No.2 – Create a same-way approach
Our second tip for having fair practices incorporated into your business is to create a guiding policy and principles.

NAB’s commitment to responsible and sustainable procurement (including our support for Fair Workplace Standards) is outlined in our Group Procurement Policy. We have also developed a comprehensive Supplier Sustainability Program and Supplier Sustainability Principles that outline our requirements for our suppliers to operate in a sustainable manner. This means that we consistently apply sustainable procurement practices – they are a part of how we do business every day.

Tip No.3 – Teach a man to fish
Finally, we recommend that you promote the great changes you have made, both internally and externally. Internally, we received a huge response to our swap to Fairtrade, some positive, some negative. This showed us that we had a great opportunity to educate our people on fair and responsible workplace standards and the importance of Fairtrade.

Our education and communication program resulted in our people being undisputedly proud of the fact that NAB was named the largest Fairtrade business in the world. Take your people, customers and community on the journey with you, as they are the ones who make these changes sustainable!
